Smooth running hubs can make the difference in the ease and feel of a cycle ride. All hubs contain bearings around which the axle rotates. Loose hubs can be readily identified by lateral movement in the wheels. Also, when spun, wheels with worn and pitted bearings will feel and sound distinctly rough. A loose hub bearing can often be tightened up to prevent any permanent damage occuring.
