| Bottom bracket | Brake cables and gear cables comprise of a steel wire inner cable and a PVC coated outer casing. These are easily corrroded, especially if your bike is exposed to the elements for any length of time. Brakes and gears are actuated by pulling the cable, and springs in the mechanism return the cables to the original starting position. Corrosion in the cables will cause friction that the springs have to overcome to move freely. Sometimes, in extreme cases, the cables will actually sieze and will not move at all. Fortunately it is a relatively easy and inexpensive job to replace cables. | |
