The diagram below outlines the components needed to electrify your bike using a front hub. To be legal for road use in the UK it must be pedal assist and to cut off at 15.5mph. A pedal assist system is just that, when you turn the crank the motor cuts in and will keep driving until you reach 15.5mph. This might not sound particularly zippy but in fact it is a very presentable speed for going uphill, especially those long drags. It really isn't cheating its just sensible, so enjoy cruising past the huffers and puffers!
